Attendees:

  • Brent Hayhoe, Espen Tallaksen, Kevin Jennings, Patrick Lehmann, Jim Lewis

Agenda:

Meeting Discussion

  • LCS Review
  • By December, need LCS for proposals that will go into standard.
  • December to March - prepare final document.
  • Discused Shared Variables of an Ordinary Type
    • Espen: Ok with deferring this to the next revision
      • Would like vendors to keep their current behavior
      • Would like the committee to state:
        • The VHDL WG will be reviewing Shared Variables of an ordinary type for the next revision and may restore this feature in the next revision.
      • Need a proposal and move the proposal to the some day maybe list
      • AI: Espen add a proposal that is for the revision after 2017
  • AI: Espen add proposal that is for the revision after 2017 on extending types in general (see suave)
  • AI: Espen: add proposal that is for the revision after 2017 to allow two types from different packages to be handled the same
    • Records - may be handled by interfaces with spaceship operator
    • Enumerated Types -
    • Array Types - Needs use cases as some things are easy and some not.
  • Discussing: LCS for large integers
    • AI: Change range s.t. it is 512 bits.
    • Consider defining subtypes of the base type. Perhaps have the current integer type be a subtype of the new type.
    • AI: Investigate what GHDL does since it has a universal integer of 64 bits and an integer implementation 32 bits.
  • AI: LCS writers send an email with VOTE LCS <word title>

Vote on Shared Variables of an ordinary type

With respect to the request to revive VHDL-1993 style shared variables of an ordinary type, if someone is willing to work on an LCS and the LCS provided is acceptable, should this item be included in the standard? Please put your name and a yes, no, or abstain below.

-- JimLewis - 2016-12-07: abstain

-- Espen Tallaksen - 2016-12-07: yes

-- Farrell Ostler - 2016-12-07: yes

-- MartinThompson - 2016-12-07: yes

-- KevinJennings - 2016-12-07: yes

-- PatrickLehmann - 2016-12-07: no

-- MartinZabel - 2016-12-14: abstain. Shared variables of an ordinary type should come back only if the execution will be deterministic. Race conditions should be avoided by design.

Put your name here to indicate that you will start writing up the proposal and, more importantly, the LCS ---> ???
